On January 28, 1986, I was driving down the 10 freeway in Los Angeles, on my way to work, when the news of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident was broadcast.
The event affected me greatly, as I was a programmer for Rockwell International on the Space Shuttle project, and had seen the Challenger up close and personal.
That evening, I put a fresh magnetic tape onto the TEAC reel-to-reel recorder in my studio and played whatever came out.
As I released the sustain pedal on the final note, I watched as the tape slid off the main reel, went through the mechanism, and started flapping around on the take-up reel.
The magnetic tape had run out just after the last note of the improvisation had ended.
Synchronicity again.
This reimagination is based on themes and elements from the original recording, as it is impossible to recreate the feelings that inspired it.
